Next stop... Portugal

16 July 2017

The Owls squad depart for Portugal this morning where the next stage of pre-season takes place.

Following two weeks of hard work at Middlewood Road, including two pre-season friendlies against Alfreton and Mansfield, the Wednesday contingent jet out to the Algarve today.

The six-day Portugal stay will see the squad put through their paces in the intense warm weather training camp.

As part of the schedule across Europe, Wednesday will face Portimonense (19 July), SC Farense (20 July) and Vitoria de Setubal (22 July).

One member of the Owls squad, in particular, braced for the trip is summer signing George Boyd, who believes such stints away from home form a vital part of the preparations.

“It’s always good to go away on pre-season, it’s good for bonding with your team mates as you’re under each other’s noses for a week,” he said.

“We have a few games out there which is nice and training in warm weather is good. You get to know everyone a little better when you go away at this time of year.

“It’s a good opportunity for us all to get together and put in the hard work.

“It’s still in the distance a little but the Preston game is what we’re all working towards. It will come around quick, they always seem to when you get to this stage.

“In the meantime, it’s about building the fitness up and getting ready for the big one on Saturday 5 August.”
