Report: SC Farense 1-1 Wednesday

20 July 2017

Wednesday continued their unbeaten run of pre-season friendlies with a 1-1 draw against Portuguese outfit SC Farense.

A low key game was punctuated only occasionally by incident, with the closest Carlos Carvalhal’s side coming to breaking the deadlock a Sam Winnall effort ruled out for offside before Steven Fletcher struck late to put the Owls in front.

But Jorginho executed a superb set piece right at the last to deny Wednesday a fourth straight win.

It was all change again for the Owls, who included young trio Connor O’Grady, Jordan Thorniley and James Murphy in the starting line-up.

And once they found their stride, Wednesday were largely a cut above their third tier opponents, with one first half move made up of 20 passes before Atdhe Nuhiu’s drilled effort was deflected wide.

The visitors continued to ask most of the questions and Joe Wildsmith was called into action only once in the opening period when Tavino attempted a clever back header that caused no real alarm.

After a ten-man melee put some spark into the contest, the Owls went close just before the break as a brave clearance from Filipe Godinho denied the onrushing Lucas Joao.

Fletcher almost made an immediate impact from the bench but his cute back heel was cleared off the line by Fabinho.

Fellow substitute Winnall did have the ball in the net just past the hour only to see a raised flag rule out his powerful header.

Farense went close with the clock counting down but Murphy and captain Liam Palmer made brave blocks in the six-yard box.

The Owls finally broke the deadlock on 78 minutes, with Fletcher stabbing in on the angle following good work from Barry Bannan and Fernando Forestieri.

But with the full time whistle looming, Farense struck with the final kick of the game as Jorginho curled an unstoppable free kick over the wall and in to claim the draw.

Wednesday: Wildsmith (Dawson 46), Palmer, Thorniley, O’Grady, Murphy, Matias (Winnall 58), Abdi (Jones 72), Wallace (Boyd 72), Reach (Bannan 58), Nuhiu (Fletcher 46), Joao (Forestieri 58)
