Great strides

29 March 2017

Owls Under-23 coach Neil Thompson has hailed the progress of the youth set-up at the club.

During the recent international break, three players from the Owls Development Squad were called up for international duty.

George Hirst (England Under-18s), Connor O’Grady (Ireland Under-21s) and Fraser Preston (Scotland Under-19s) linked up with their international team mates last week.

James Murphy is also set to join the USA Under-20s next month at a training camp in the capital.

Delighted with the international recognition, Thompson said: “It's fantastic and it shows the strides the club have made in the academy in the last four or five years.

“That's what we want to do.

“Unfortunately when they go away, you can't use them at club level which sometimes leaves you a bit stretched.

“But it's great recognition for the boys.

“It's a fantastic experience to go and play with the best players in their country, for them to have a little taste of that and come back to their bread and butter stronger.”
