Hirst receives England call

16 May 2017

Owls striker George Hirst has been included in the England squad for the prestigious Toulon Tournament.

England will head to the south of France for the annual competition next week with an 18-man squad from a mixture of age groups, ranging from this season’s Under-18s, Under-19s and Under-20s.

The Three Lions will play their first game on 29 May against Angola in Aubagne before the first ever international meeting with Cuba takes place in Salon de Provence three days later.

The group stage is rounded off on 4 June when England return to Aubagne for their clash with Japan, after which the semi finals will take place.

England head to Toulon aiming to defend the title too, after Gareth Southgate’s Under-21s won the competition last June.

England have been named in Group A and will play three games to try and qualify for the semi finals:

29 May: England v Angola, Stade De Lattre-de-Tassigny Aubagne; 7.30pm
1 June, Cuba v England, Stade D’Honneur Marcel Roustan Salon De Provence, 7.30pm
4 June: Japan v England, Stade De Lattre-de-Tassigny Aubagne, 3pm

Group B includes Bahrain, Ivory Coast, France and Wales, whilst Group C features Brazil, Indonesia, Czech Republic and Scotland.

The first placed teams from each group will progress to the semi-finals on 8 June, alongside one runner-up. The final is scheduled for 10 June.

Hirst scored two goals in the play-off final last week as the Owls scooped the PDL2 National Championship with a 3-1 win over Hull.
