Respect the game and fight for points

5 May 2017

For the weeks building up to Sunday’s season finale, it seemed the clash with Fulham could become a do or die in terms of the play-off picture.

But with both sides in the top six and that now not the case, the emphasis has somewhat switched.

The main focus is of course the play-off campaign but Carlos Carvalhal says the clash with Fulham is important to the club with a capacity Hillsborough watching on.

“It’s a game that won’t decide anything in terms of achieving the play-offs but it is a game we must respect,” he said.

“We are focused on the play-offs because we must be like this. But we are taking this game very, very seriously.

“Understanding, I will put players to play that play often during the season but last games have not been involved.

“We have done the most important thing achieving the play-offs and this part of the job is done.

“We will try to do our best to win the game and fight for the three points. We won’t look to the position to see who we will face in the play-offs.”

Of course, Sunday’s result for the Owls will have a bearing on the final league standings and hence, who Wednesday will face and in which order.

But this will be in the back of everyone’s mind as Carlos explained:

“We will just look to win and after, if we want to be champions, we must just try to win all the games.

“If you win the games, you are in the final and if we win that, then we are the champions. We are not looking to others.”
