Preston at the last for 23s

24 April 2018

The Owls Under-23s are within a point of retaining their league title following a 1-1 draw at Colchester on Monday night.

Late, late drama in Essex saw Fraser Preston score a stoppage time equaliser after Ryan Gondoh gave the U’s a second half lead.

Then, right at the last, Wednesday keeper Dan Wallis saved substitute Callum Jones’ penalty to give his side the platform for potential title glory.

The Owls host Burnley at Hillsborough (1.00pm) for their final game of the campaign on Friday, armed with the knowledge that a draw will be enough to lift the silverware for the second successive season.

With 16 minutes remaining, though, it seemed as though Colchester were on course for victory.

Gondoh picked up possession on the angle and drilled an unstoppable shot past Wallis to break the deadlock.

But Wednesday hit back after a period of pressure with 93 minutes on the clock as Preston headed home at the far post.

Still there was time for the referee to point to the spot when Connor O’Grady was adjudged to have felled Gondoh in the box but Wallis saved superbly to preserve the point.

Wednesday: Wallis, O’Grady, West, Baker, Nielsen (Hunt 60), Williams (Waldock 33), Preston, Lee, Borukov (Stobbs 66), Kirby, Lonchar
