A learning curve

23 August 2018

Owls Under-23s manager Neil Thompson said his team must learn from their 5-0 defeat to Bristol City last Monday.

Wednesday were level 0-0 at half time, but a second half collapse saw the Robins come away with an emphatic victory.

Thompson said: “It was a strange match, it was not a 5-0 game.

“We were more than in the game at half time but we made costly mistakes and we have got to learn from it.

“We didn’t take our chances and we were a bit naïve in defence and attack.

“The Bristol team were a lot older than us, as we had players missing with them being on first team duty, so some younger players have stepped up.

“Taking opportunities is the difference at this level, because at this age, players are not as clinical.”

Thompson believes the opportunity is there for younger players to impress with the Under-23s, with many of the current team making the jump to the first team.

He added: “It’s a great time for the young players.

“Matt Penney and Fraser Preston have made their senior debuts which is great to see.

“With some of the Under-23s moving up it gives a chance for others to show what they can do.”
