Owls manager Jos Luhukay was pleased to see his side progress into the second round of the Carabao Cup after beating Sunderland 2-0 at the Stadium of Light.

Goals either side of half time from Marco Matias and Adam Reach sealed victory for a Wednesday side that included several young players, some of whom were making their first appearance for the Owls.

Luhukay said: “I am happy that we have our first win of the season.

“We played well, Sunderland created some chances but they did not score which is positive for us.

“Although Sunderland had a lot of the possession, we took our chances with the two goals.”

There were debuts for Alex Hunt, Matt Penney and Jack Lee in Wearside with Connor Kirby and Freddie Nielsen adding to their previous appearances, and Luhukay was delighted to see the youngsters step up.

The Dutchman added: “Today we had five players from our Under-23s in the team.

“This is a positive thing for us, we want to see these players progress and to do this they need to play matches.

“It is good for us to see what they can do when they have an opportunity to play in the first team.”
