Match preview: Owls v Birmingham

31 December 2018

The Owls begin 2019 with a home fixture against Birmingham and here is swfc.co.uk’s match preview;

Confidence is high in the Owls’ camp after three positive performances over the festive period.

Despite West Brom’s late equaliser at The Hawthorns on Saturday, Wednesday can take plenty from their recent turnaround in form, which has included wins over Preston and Middlesbrough.

Meanwhile, the Blues have won four of their last seven games, losing just one and are four points behind sixth spot.

Birmingham have not conceded in their last three outings and won the previous meeting between the two sides by a 3-1 scoreline at St Andrew’s in October.

Team news

Owls: Keiren Westwood and Steven Fletcher could both return to the starting XI after missing the trip to West Brom.

Adam Reach (hamstring) was substituted during the first half at The Hawthorns, though caretaker boss Lee Bullen said after the game the change was precautionary and the 25-year-old could be involved on Tuesday.

Sam Winnall made his first senior appearance on Saturday since February and the striker will be hoping to play a part on New Year’s Day at Hillsborough.

Birmingham: Kristian Pedersen (ankle) is a doubt after missing Blues' last three games. Marc Roberts (hamstring), Isaac Vassell (hip) and David Davis (ankle) remain sidelined.
