U18 report: Leeds 2-0 Owls

9 December 2018

The Owls Under-18s suffered a second defeat of the campaign at the hands of Leeds United on Saturday.

The Whites ran out 2-0 winners and remain the only side to take three points from Wednesday this season, completing the double at Thorp Arch.

Goals either side of the break from Charlie Cresswell and Niklas Haugland sealed victory for United.

The breakthrough came midway through the first half when Cresswell’s bullet header flew into the top corner via a ricochet off the post and a touch from the unfortunate Conor Grant.

Leeds’ second came on 63 minutes when Haugland’s deflected effort found the back of the net, with the ball taking a touch from Isaac Rice before nestling into the bottom corner.

The Owls were forced to play the final 15 minutes with ten men as Grant, who just moments earlier saw his free kick cannon back off the upright, picked up a minor injury, with all three substitutions already made.

And with that, there was little hope of a comeback for Wednesday who now turn their attention to the FA Youth Cup clash with Stoke at Hillsborough on Thursday (7.00pm)

The winners will face Everton at home in round four.

Owls: Render, Dawodu (Thompson 55), Ellery, Kenyon (Farmer 74), Reaney, Rice, Hagan, Waldock, Hammoud (O’Brien 46), Grant, Vasalo
