Round-up: 18s prove too strong for Hull and 23s held at Birmingham

14 January 2018

Under-18s

The Owls Under-18s proved too strong for a young Hull City side on Saturday, running out 8-0 winners at Middlewood Road.

The Tigers, unexpectedly made up of players from the club’s Under-14, 15 and 16 squad, could offer little in reply to a rampant Owls side on the day.

Goals from Jordan O’Brien, Joe West, Alex Hunt (2), Ciaran Brennan, Ben Hughes (2) and Conor Grant did the damage for Wednesday, who eased to victory against the Tigers.

Owls: Brazinskas, Dawodu, West (Hammoud 45), Gavrilov (Swaine 45), Reaney, Brennan, Hughes, Hunt, Lonchar, Grant, O’Brien (Brandy 68)

Under-23s

The Owls Under-23s posted a point from their trip to Birmingham with a 1-1 draw in the PDL2 on Friday.

The Blues named a strong side for the Under-23 clash with Arsenal loanee Carl Jenkinson and forward Che Adams named in the starting line-up.

But it was Wednesday who went ahead just before the half hour mark with the goal coming from a swift counter.

Jack Stobbs’ centre was met in the middle by Connor Kirby, whose header crept beneath Blues goalkeeper Jake Weaver.

The hosts, though, hit back strong after the break and levelled from the penalty spot on 67 minutes.

Kyle McFarlane was the man who notched the equaliser, tucking home the rebound after Dan Wallis had saved his initial spot kick.

Wednesday had to be resilient as the game approached its conclusion with the Blues coming forward in search of a late winner.

Wallis made an outstanding save to deny Corey O’Keefe, keeping out the header from a dangerous McFarlane delivery.

But the visitors held on for a point in the West Midlands.

Owls: Wallis, Baker, Clarke, Murphy, Neilsen, Williams, Stobbs (Hughes 85), Kirby, Borukov, Waldock (Grant 65), Preston (Brennan 88)
