23s begin pre-season with Hallam victory

11 July 2018

Sheffield Wednesday’s Under-23 squad kicked-off their pre-season fixture schedule with a 2-1 victory over Hallam FC at Sandygate on Tuesday.

The first of six pre-season friendlies for Neil Thompson’s side began in strong fashion with trialist Sam Smart giving the visitors the lead on 12 minutes.

Fraser Preston’s delivery from the left was helped on its way towards goal by Jordan Lonchar and Smart got the final touch from close range.

Preslav Borukov then finished a fine flowing move just before the break to put the Wednesday youngsters firmly in the driving seat.

The Bulgarian youth international applied a neat finish to clip over Hallam goalkeeper Andrew Sneath, with Jack Lee and Smart involved in the build-up.

The hosts halved the deficit with 15 minutes remaining through Jamie Damms’ well-placed header.

But the Owls finished in the ascendancy as Alex Hunt forced an excellent stop from Sneath moments after the restart and the visitors comfortably saw out the final moments to register their first win of pre-season.

The Owls Under-23s are next in action away at Leicester on Friday 20 July (11.00am).
