Owls v Wigan last five

The Owls begin the 2018/19 season with a trip to Wigan on Saturday and here swfc.co.uk takes a look back at previous meetings between the two sides.

Wednesday have emerged victorious from the past four Championship encounters but we start a little over four years ago when the Latics struck late to claim the points..

The Latics posted their seventh straight win in all competitions courtesy of Jordi Gomez’s late penalty.

The game saw Owls loanee Leon Best denied from the penalty spot by goalkeeper Ali Al Habsi, who was fortunate not to see red after bringing down Jacques Maghoma in the first half.

Stevie May scored twice as Wednesday ended their 11-game winless run.

Jose Semedo hit the post early for the Owls before Chris McCann gave the visitors the lead with a powerful header.

Wednesday equalised a minute later when May found the net from Atdhe Nuhiu’s neat lay off
Lewis McGugan cleared a Wigan effort off the line before May met Chris Maguire's cross and his header was adjudged to have crossed the line after hitting both uprights.

Atdhe Nuhiu’s 76th minute winner settled this midweek clash at The DW Stadium.

Future Owls loanee Callum McManaman saw red on 68 minutes for a challenge deemed dangerous on Claude Dielna, and Wednesday made the numerical advantage count.

Wednesday came from behind to get back to winning ways at Hillsborough with a 2-1 triumph over Wigan.

contest eventually fell in the Owls’ favour after Will Grigg gave the Latics an early lead and Steven Fletcher equalised before Fernando Forestieri fired what proved the winner.

The Owls ground out what proved a crucial three points with a 1-0 win at relegation-threatened Wigan.

Ross Wallace scored the only goal just before half time to settle the live TV clash.
