U23 report: Burnley 0-1 Owls

23 March 2018

Sheffield Wednesday Under-23s picked up three points at Burnley on Friday afternoon.

In a close-fought contest at Barnfield, Ash Baker’s first half goal proved to be the difference in a game of few chances.

The hosts failed to deal with a routine ball into the box on the half hour and the defender was in the right place to prod home from close range.

As well as the three points, there were more positives from the game with Barry Bannan storing 70 minutes under the belt, while Jordan Thorniley played the full 90 on his return.

Owls coach Neil Thompson said: “I thought we did OK, it was a sloppy opening 20 minutes but we changed a few things round and deserved the win.

“Yes, it was a bit of a scrap but we are pleased with the win and the clean sheet.

“We have been on the wrong side of things recently results-wise, with injuries and players not being available for us.

“We should have beaten Watford in our last game and Crewe the time before that. But, we can be happy with the lads today.”

He added: “Of course, it was good for Baz to get 70 minutes, that was important for him and he came through the game fine.

“Jordan also to get 90 minutes at the back for us was a big positive as well so we’ll take that and look forward to the Coventry game.”
