Anything can happen

9 November 2018

The adage of form going out of the window in derbies is one that rings true for Tom Lees.

Wednesday make the short hop across the city on Friday night to go head to head with Sheffield United.

And Lees believes that any outcome is possible from a clash as hotly contested as the Steel City derby.

“Obviously you’d like to be going into it on a good run of form but these are games that are almost one-offs,” the captain explained.

“They are like finals, they are one-off games and anything can happen. We have got to approach it as the biggest game of our season so far.

“We are desperate for a win without it being a derby anyway, but we have got that added on top now.”

Lees made the point of not playing down the magnitude of the occasion on two fronts; one to get Wednesday back on an upward curve and two for the bragging rights of the city.

“It will be a heated affair,” he continued. “I’m not going to play down how big an occasion it is, and we are well aware of what it means.

“We have spoken about the importance of what a result could do for us moving forwards.

“But we can say all the things before the game but all that matters is how we play on Friday.

“A good result out of this is something we need.”
