U18 report: Hull 0-2 Owls

13 October 2018

Sheffield Wednesday’s unbeaten Under-18s returned to winning ways with a 2-0 success away at Hull on Saturday morning.

After back to back 2-2 draws with Crewe and Bolton, the Owls academy posted three points in East Yorkshire with a routine victory over league strugglers Hull.

After a frustrating first period with the scores level, goals in the second half from Jordan O’Brien (penalty) and Charles Hagan sealed a deserved win on the road for Andy Holdsworth’s side.

Wednesday were strong from the off and unfortunate not to be ahead from the fourth minute when Liam Waldock hit the crossbar from the edge of the box.

O’Brien was also denied at the last by the Tigers goalkeeper after going through on goal, while Eyad Hammoud, who also featured for the Under-23s on Friday, went close with a low strike before the break.

Given the heavy pressure and frequency of attacks, a Wednesday goal seemed inevitable and the breakthrough came in the 49th minute from the spot.

L’Varn Brandy took possession in the box, drew the foul after taking a touch and the referee pointed to the spot.

O’Brien stepped up and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way from 12 yards to make it 1-0.

The points were made safe 14 minutes from time when striker Hagan scored a fine solo goal.

Josh Dawodu did well to read and intercept a diagonal ball before playing to Hagan, who charged forward, cut inside onto his left foot and placed the ball neatly into the bottom corner.

Wednesday face a stern test next Saturday against Yorkshire rivals Leeds, who are also enjoying a strong 2018/19 campaign.

Kick-off is at 11.00am at Middlewood Road.

Owls: Render, Dawodu, Oliver, Kenyon, Thompson, Ellery, Brandy (Brandy 81), Waldock, Hammoud (Hagan 46), Farmer, O’Brien

Unused substitutes: Jackson, Glaves, Glover
