Owls international round-up

8 September 2018

The Owls have five players currently away on international duty as the Championship closed down for the first break of the new campaign.

Defender Ash Baker and striker Atdhe Nuhiu received call-ups for the Wales Under-21s and Kosovo seniors, while new loanees Michael Hector and Josh Onomah represented Jamaica and the England Under-21s respectively.

Young forward Preslav Borukov was on duty for the Bulgaria Under-19s.

First up, right back Baker debuted for Wales as Rob Page’s side posted a 2-1 win over Liechtenstein in the European Championship qualifiers.

Baker played the full 90 minutes in a holding midfield role and impressed at Bangor’s Nanporth Stadium, the same venue where Wales host Holland this coming Tuesday, 11 September.

Meanwhile, Nuhiu was an unused substitute as Kosovo played out a goalless draw against hosts Azerbaijan in the UEFA Nations League.

The Wednesday hitman will be hoping for game time when Kosovo return home to play the Faroe Islands on Monday, 10 September.

On the loan front, Owls boss Jos Luhukay recruited two Premier League players on deadline day – centre back Hector from Chelsea and Tottenham midfield man Onomah.

Both jetted away almost immediately to represent their countries and featured over the weekend.

Hector stored 90 minutes as Jamaica went down 2-0 in a friendly against Ecuador at the home side’s Red Bull Arena.

Jamaica play host to Cayman Islands on Monday in the CONCACAF Nations League qualifiers.

Onomah played 64 minutes for England’s Under-21s as the Young Lions were held to a 0-0 draw by Holland in the European Championship qualifier held at Carrow Road, Norwich.

Onomah will be on board when England travel across Europe to face Latvia on Monday as Aidy Boothroyd’s team look to extend their lead at the summit.

Both Hector and Onomah will be eligible for their debuts when the Owls welcome Stoke to Hillsborough on the resumption of the Championship next Saturday, 15 September.

Finally, Borukov enjoyed a particularly memorable outing as the highly-rated Wednesday striker wore the captain’s armband and scored as the Bulgaria Under-19s beat Hannover 96 3-0.
