18s frustrated in the capital

14 April 2019

The Owls Under-18s’ title hopes were dented on Saturday after suffering a narrow 1-0 loss away at Millwall.

With rivals Leeds picking up maximum points against Coventry in their final game of the season, the Owls are four points off top spot with two games to play.

A top two spot is now guaranteed but Andy Holdsworth’s side still have the title in their sights and face Coventry at Middlewood Road on Tuesday.

The 18s then face Sheffield United at Shirecliffe on the final day of the season next Saturday.

It was a frustrating day in the capital for the young Owls, who created plenty but failed to convert their chances and were ultimately made to pay.

Wednesday almost found the breakthrough after 16 minutes through a Conor Grant free kick that was superbly saved and went closer still on the stroke of half time when L’Varn Brandy hit the post.

Eyad Hammoud was denied ten minutes after the restart by another smart save and the frustrations continued for the visitors as Liam Shaw’s low effort was kept out after a driving run through on goal.

Then the decisive moment came on 72 minutes as the hosts fired home the only goal of the game from close range, despite the best efforts of the Owls defenders on the goal line.

A disappointed day for the Owls academy but the 18s are not out of the race for top spot with four points from the last two games enough to hit the summit due to their superior goal difference.

Owls: Render, Dawodu, Ellery, Waldock (Reaney 10), Thompson, Rice, Hagan, Shaw, Hammoud (Vasalo 74), Grant, Brandy (Farmer 59)
