Focused only on ourselves

12 April 2019

Saturday’s round of Championship fixtures carries bags of significance up and down the league table.

Wednesday face a huge Yorkshire derby with Leeds at Elland Road, with the Whites looking to stay in pole position for an automatic promotion spot.

Although a play-off spot now looks a big ask, while the possibility remains, Steve Bruce says his side will not give up.

Irrespective of happenings elsewhere, Bruce insists focus remains only with his side and staying in the race leading into the Easter fixtures.

“We know we have to go there and get a result if we are going to keep our season alive,” Bruce said.

“They have got to get a result too, live on the telly, full house and it’s what we’re in football for, days like tomorrow.

“I think we are all engrossed in what we have to do ourselves. We’ve got to go and make sure because we still have a chance, that we take it if we can.

“When you are still in with a chance you have to go for it and then see what the next weekend brings.

“Can we take it to the Easter weekend? Back to back games, you can quite easily lose a couple of games in this league so we have got to see what we can do.”

Leeds have won seven of their last ten but the Owls are also in good form under Bruce, with just one defeat in 13.

The derby has all the makings for a memorable clash and Bruce added:

“He’s got them playing with a certain intensity, he demands, before we consider anything else, hard work.

“The team reflects that, teams have struggled against them, they are at the top end of the league, they come at you, get the ball back as quick as they can and play with men piling forward.

“It should be a good game, we have to overcome all that and cause them problems ourselves.”
