Sheffield Wednesday are saddened to learn of the passing of our former player Junior Agogo, aged 40.

Junior was spotted by the Owls playing amateur football in London as a teenager, he was invited for a week’s trial in which he impressed to earn his first professional contract.

The pacey striker became established in Wednesday’s Northern Intermediate side, where he scored 10 goals in 29 appearances during the 1996/97 season.

Wednesday manager David Pleat handed Junior a place on the bench for the opening game of the 1997/98 season against Newcastle, with the forward making his Premier League debut aged 18 as a replacement for Guy Whittingham with 13 minutes left on the clock at St James’ Park.

The youngster also helped Wednesday win the Northern Conference of the FA Premier Youth League.

His final appearance for the Owls came against Leeds in March 1999.

Our thoughts are with Junior’s family and friends at this very difficult time.
