Packed schedule as Owls go Dutch

12 August 2019

The Owls Under-18s have returned from their 12-night training camp in the Netherlands.

The tour formed part of the Under-18s’ preparations for the new season which begins on Saturday away at Ipswich.

Wednesday arrived in Amsterdam on Tuesday 30 July and, along with daily training sessions, faced friendly games with Vitesse Under-19s and FC Cologne, as well as taking in a tour of the Johan Cruyff Arena, the home of Dutch champions AFC Ajax.

To round off the trip, Andy Holdsworth’s side took part in the Sportclub Lochem Under-19 tournament, organised through League Football Education’s Erasmus+ programme.

The two-day event on Saturday and Sunday saw eight teams compete in two separate groups.

Group A consisted off Cheltenham, Go Ahead Eagles, Sportclub Lochem and Sheffield Wednesday.

In Group B were, Barnsley, Burton, Sendai Niko and Vitesse.

The Owls topped Group A with victories over Cheltenham (1-0) and Sportclub Lochem (6-1).

Wednesday also picked up a 2-2 draw with Go Ahead Eagles to seal their place in the tournament final with Group B winners Vitesse.

After a 0-0 draw in normal time, Wednesday were pipped to the silverware on penalties but will take plenty away from a strong pre-season campaign.

Good luck at Ipswich, boys!
