The squad have made it difficult for me

2 August 2019

Lee Bullen has praised the professionalism, focus and character of the players ahead of Wednesday’s opening game of the season.

The Owls kick off their campaign on Saturday at Reading and in terms of selecting the matchday squad, the Scot says it will be a difficult decision.

After weeks of fitness-based work combined with strong tests in pre-season friendlies, Wednesday go into the new term in excellent shape.

Injury-wise, only Joe Wildsmith is absent after picking up a knock during the Lubeck friendly in Germany.

Aside from Dominic Iorfa, who continues to serve a suspension hung over from last season, Bullen has everyone available for selection.

“They are all fine and fit for selection except for Joe Wildsmith. As far as pre-season goes, you want to get players fit and avoid injury so on those fronts we are in good fettle.

“The full squad of players have made it very difficult for me.

“Whatever eleven we start with, I’m very confident we can go out and put a good performance in.”

The week leading up to the big kick-off has been a productive one for the players behind the scenes and he added:

“When you do your coaching badges, one of the primary things they focus on is ‘control the controllable’.

“A lot of things outside of the football as a coach or manager, you just can’t control.

“All we can do is focus on what we do during the Monday-Friday in the build-up to the game.

“Our job is about keeping the players focused and their minds on what they are doing and they have certainly done that.”
