Under-23s slip to defeat at Leeds

9 December 2019

The Owls Under-23s lost a close fought Yorkshire derby with Leeds on Monday afternoon, going down 1-0 at Thorp Arch.

The fixture gave valuable game-time to returning goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith, while there were also appearances for Ash Baker, David Bates, Joey Pelupessy and Sam Winnall.

The home side dominated the early proceedings, with the first meaningful chance coming from a Barry Douglas through ball that Pascal Struijk put wide when sliding in.

Wednesday responded by launching a swift attack of their own as Winnall laid the ball through for the energetic Jordan O’Brien, only for Ilan Meslier in the Whites goal to make a strong diving save.

The hosts should have gone ahead moments later when Ryan Edmondson got his head to Leif Davis’ cross but the forward could only head over Wildsmith’s goal.

It proved a busy period in the game for Wildsmith, who was called into action minutes later to punch a Douglas cross to safety, in difficult windy conditions.

Ash Baker was then forced to clear off the line from a Leeds corner as the hosts applied the pressure heading towards the half hour mark.

At the other end of the field, Meslier was alert to smother the danger at the feet of Winnall, who had made a good run into the box from Fraser Preston’s ball.

Leeds had one final chance before the interval as Edmondson directed his header onto the crossbar from Jordan Stevens’ centre before Bates managed to complete the clearance.

Following the restart, Leeds dangerman Eddie Nketiah forced a good save from Wildsmith but the Whites were not to be denied as Mateusz Bogusz fired Leeds in front on 55 minutes.

And the Whites then appeared to double their lead when Struijk’s long range effort was parried by Wildsmith into the path of Nketiah for a simple finish, but the Arsenal loanee was flagged offside.

As the Owls got a firmer footing in the game, Winnall played through for O’Brien but Meslier did well to close down the angle and stop the shot.

In the final ten minutes Wednesday continued to push for the equaliser but could not find a way through, with Alex Hunt’s acrobatic effort over the bar the closest the visitors came.

Owls: Wildsmith, Baker, West, Hunt, Urhoghide, Bates, O’Brien (Grant 85), Pelupessy (Waldock 58), Borukov, Preston (Hughes 75), Winnall
