Steve Bruce tagged the 2-0 win over Brentford as his new side’s best performance since he took the S6 reins in early February.
Wednesday pressed the Bees from the first whistle, playing a high pressing game to which the visitors had little answer.
By the time Brentford began to see more of the ball, the damage was already done as a Steven Fletcher brace sealed victory.
Bruce said: “That was the best display in my short time here so far. The players showed terrific energy levels, they pressed high and Brentford couldn’t play their passing game.
“We know they like to play out from the back so we didn’t want them to settle and it worked well.
“That allowed us to take control of the game and we got the goals through big Fletch that we deserved.
“I don’t want to be greedy because I’ll take a 2-0 but I think on another day we could have had more.”
On the downside, Bruce rued the injury to loan recruit Achraf Lazaar, who limped out of action with a hamstring injury.
He explained: “That’s the real negative for me tonight and I feel for the lad. He’s been beaming since Saturday when he had such a terrific debut.
“He hasn’t played much football so the question was, ‘could he play two games in a few days?’
“I think with hindsight I might have played it differently but Foxy wasn’t quite right.
“It looks like a bad one but we will know more once we’ve had him assessed.”
