Taking it step by step

20 February 2019

Achraf Lazaar is working hard towards his first appearance for the Owls.

The defender – on loan from Newcastle until the end of the season – played 74 minutes of the Under-23s’ 2-0 win over Sheffield United on Tuesday.

The PDL2 fixture at Bramall Lane saw his fellow Magpies loanee Rolando Aarons score in the first half.

Conor Grant added a second after the break.

Lazaar is feeling positive over his first two and a half weeks at the club and is eager to make his debut for Steve Bruce’s side.

“I hope the Wednesday fans can see me soon,” he said. “But I will just keep working hard and do my job.

“The team has great quality, the guys have good spirit to work hard.

“Every time you have the chance to go onto the pitch, even in training you have to do your work to the best you can.

“You have to give it everything because a lot of people would want to be in my position but I am happy to have this chance with Sheffield Wednesday.

“I’m ready when the manager needs me, when he needs me I am here and ready to give everything for the team.

“Whether it’s in the first team, Under-23s or training I will give 100%.

“I am fit, I feel good and I want to keep getting better and better.”

Lazaar posted an impressive performance for Neil Thompson’s side on Tuesday and went within inches of scoring with a long range hit that cannoned off the inside of the post.

He continued: “I have to go step by step to be in the top level.

“The group is hard-working and we hope to have some big results. The manager has helped me a lot and I think I can learn a lot from him.

“I am going to give everything for the shirt because this club has given me the chance.”
