U18 report: Burnley 2-2 Owls

5 January 2019

The Owls Under-18s began 2019 with a 2-2 draw away at Burnley on Saturday morning.

Burnley, who named a strong side made up largely of second year scholars, began the day fourth in the table and struck first after just eight minutes.

Wednesday failed to clear their lines from a direct ball into the box and Clarets striker Michael Fowler profited by firing low into the bottom corner.

But the Owls responded in a positive fashion and levelled the game after 33 minutes from the penalty spot.

L’Varn Brandy and Conor Grant combined in the middle before the latter found Eyad Hammoud in space, who drove into the box, drew the foul and won the penalty.

There was little doubt over the decision and no mistake from 12 yards as Grant put the Owls on level terms.

Then on the stroke of half time, the Owls hit the front through Liam Waldock who started and finished the move.

Waldock found Grant with a crisp ball in midfield, who in turn fed Hammoud to test the goalkeeper with a low strike that was finished on the rebound by Waldock.

But there was a late, late sting in the tail for the Owls as Burnley levelled from the penalty spot deep into added time.

Six minutes from time after a scramble in front of goal, Burnley defender Richard Taylor attacked the ball from close range, Grant’s attempted clearance ended with the Clarets man taking a full boot to the face.

There was some concern for Taylor, who was down for over 15 minutes following the clash which resulted in a penalty for the hosts.

Fowler stepped up to convert from 12 yards, with the ball hitting the back of the net on 100 minutes.

Everyone at Sheffield Wednesday wishes Richard Taylor the best in his recovery.

Next up for the Owls is a home clash with Barnsley next Saturday.

Owls: Render, Dawodu, Oliver, Waldock, Reaney, Rice, Brandy (Hagan 64), Farmer (Kenyon 78), Hammoud, Grant, O’Brien
