U18s report: Owls 2-2 Barnsley

13 January 2019

The Owls Under-18s came back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Barnsley at Middlewood Road on Saturday.

Wednesday suffered an early set back when the usually reliable Josh Render misjudged a long punt forward, allowing the visitors to hit the front inside the first minute.

Barnsley – out to avenge their 6-0 defeat at the hands of Wednesday earlier in the campaign – doubled their advantage ten minutes into the second half.

A simple tap in from six yards from a low ball into the box gave Wednesday a mountain to climb but climb it they did.

Just before the hour mark, the Owls struck on the counter and pulled a goal back with Elliot Vasalo’s effort saved by the goalkeeper before Jordan O’Brien followed up to tap home.

It seemed the comeback was well and truly on when the Owls were awarded a penalty after Eyad Hammoud was brought down in the box but O’Brien couldn’t double his tally on this occasion and sent the ball wide from 12 yards.

But the home side showed their character to bounce back and grabbed a second goal 18 minutes from time to salvage a point.

Vasalo drove into the box from a Charles Hagan flick on before squaring to O’Brien, whose shot cannoned back off the upright but kindly into the path of Vasalo to finish from close range.

Owls: Render, Dawodu, Oliver, Reaney, Thompson (Farmer 74), Rice, Brandy (Hagan 59), Waldock, Vasalo, Hammoud, O’Brien
