U18s report: Preston 3-2 Owls

25 July 2019

The Owls Under-18s let slip a 2-0 lead to go down 3-2 in a pre-season friendly at Preston on Wednesday afternoon.

L’Varn Brandy and Basile Zottos put Wednesday into the ascendancy but the home side hit back in the second half to claim the win in an entertaining warm-up fixture.

The Owls deservedly held a slender one-goal advantage at the break with Brandy and Charles Hagan combining well for the former to break the deadlock on 42 minutes.

And the second half also began brightly for the visitors as Andy Holdsworth’s side gained a two-goal cushion on 54 minutes.

First year scholar Zottos tapped home just yards from goal from a dangerous Declan Thompson ball into the middle.

But Preston’s response was swift and decisive and from the restart, the hosts halved the deficit.

Ethan Walker finished a powerful burst forward with a low strike into the net.

From then, there was an apparent shift in momentum and the equaliser came in the 64th minute when Jacob Holland-Wilkinson fired home from close range after Luke Jackson had saved his initial strike.

Wednesday were hit on the counter 15 minutes from time and fell behind from the penalty spot, with Walker stepping to register his second goal of the game from 12 yards.

The 18s travel to Huddersfield Friday (11.00am) before heading off to Holland for their pre-season tour on Tuesday.
