U23 report: Barnsley 0-0 Owls

13 March 2019

The Owls Under-23s drew 0-0 with Barnsley on Wednesday afternoon at Oakwell’s training ground.

In extremely challenging conditions, with strong winds severely disrupting the flow of the game, neither side managed to sustain attacks and create any chances of note.

Alex Hunt saw an early effort pushed away from goal by Reds goalkeeper Jack Walton inside five minutes.

As conditions worsened throughout the opening period, there was little to test either goalkeeper though Barnsley defender Sam Fielding went close on the stroke of half time with a header that drifted wide.

Barnsley began the second half brightly but were kept at bay by strong defending from Ash Baker, Freddie Nielsen and Jack Lee, with Owls goalkeeper Cameron McCulloch rarely troubled.

Though the Wednesday keeper was called into action in the final few moments and made a key save from Elliot Simoes, who attempted the chip after latching on to a long ball but McCulloch sent the ball behind for a corner.

Neil Thompson’s side are next in action Monday 25 March away at Ipswich.

Owls: McCulloch, Baker, Nielsen, J Lee, West, Preston (Waldock 75), Kirby, Hunt, Grant, Damba (Borukov 60), Shaw
