Report: Wednesday 1-1 Fulham

21 September 2019

Atdhe Nuhiu salvaged a point for Wednesday in stoppage time against Fulham to maintain new manager Garry Monk’s unbeaten start.

Scott Parker’s side bossed much of the first half and deservedly went down the tunnel in front with skipper Tom Cairney's strike.

But the Owls gave a better account of themselves in the second period, and Nuhiu’s last minute header cancelled out Cairney’s effort to earn his side a share of the spoils.

Wednesday did take the contest to the Cottagers and Steven Fletcher went close inside 10 minutes following good work down the right from Adam Reach.

Fulham slowly but surely found their feet, though, and only a perfectly-timed challenge by Moses Odubajo thwarted Ivan Cavaleiro as the Portuguese was about to pull the trigger.

But the Owls hit straight back and Marcus Bettinelli dived low to his left to keep out Reach from a trademark Kadeem Harris cross.

The Fulham keeper was called into action again to smother Kieran Lee’s low drive before the visitors got a real grip on the game in the later stages of the opening 45.

And three minutes ahead of the interval, Fulham hit the front. Joe Bryan delivered a cutting delivery from the left that Keiren Westwood parried but only as far as Cairney who slotted home.

With Fulham notorious for keeping the ball for long periods, the Owls had an uphill task in the second half needing to get a goal.

Barry Bannan sent a half volley narrowly over the bar and then the midfield man stood up a cross to the back post that evaded substitute Jacob Murphy by a whisker.

Sam Winnall was also introduced from the bench as Wednesday went in search of a leveller and his glancing header was expertly spooned from danger by Bettinelli.

The Owls were still pressing when the fourth official showed five minutes of injury time on his board and Wednesday took full advantage.

Harris drove down the left before his cross was deflected straight into the path of the Owls’ third substitute Nuhiu and the Kosovan made no mistake to nod past Bettinelli.

Wednesday: Westwood, Odubajo, Borner, Iorfa, Palmer, Harris, Hutchinson, Lee (Winnall 70), Bannan, Reach (Murphy 62), Fletcher (Nuhiu 77)
