Stick to our principles

26 September 2019

Garry Monk says Sheffield Wednesday are preparing for another tough afternoon in the Sky Bet Championship when they travel to Middlesbrough on Saturday.

The Wednesday boss is more than familiar with the qualities of the players at the Riverside but says focus, as ever, has been on what his side can achieve on the pitch on Saturday.

“We are preparing for a tough game,” Monk said on Thursday afternoon at his pre-match press conference.

“It comes down to the fact that the way I work is to concentrate on ourselves the most.

“Of course you need to know what threat Middlesbrough pose in certain areas and prepare for that.

“But 90% of what I do is on what we need to do and do well with our own principles. That’s what I’ve done since I came here and that’s what we’ve done this week.

“If we put what we know we can on the pitch and do it to the kind of level we are trying to push for, because as I’ve said many times, we have the quality to hurt teams as well.”

Monk will be returning to his former club this weekend, having managed Boro between June and December in 2017.

He added: “I said it before the Huddersfield game with all the talk there, it’s not about me, it’s about this team and helping the players achieve. Regardless of whether you’re facing a former club, former player, it’s always about the team.”
