Garry Monk has revealed that Barry Bannan will assume captain duties for the 2020/21 campaign.
The Owls’ boss confirmed the switch after Bannan led out the team for the goalless draw with Leicester at Loughborough on Saturday.
He exclusively told swfc.co.uk: “I have spoken to Barry and Tom Lees and I’ve made that decision - I just feel Baz is at that stage here at Sheffield Wednesday where I want to challenge him and that is the reason for him having that captain’s armband.
“We all know how good a player he is but for him to go to that next step, another level that we’re going to need this season, this is a way of challenging that.
“With Tom, he’s been fantastic, he understands that it’s best for Barry and for the team in that sense.
“Tom is a leader anyway whether he has the armband or not, he’s a true leader with the standards he sets every day and everyone respects him for that and that will not be diminished.”
