Bannan takes Owls armband

29 August 2020

Garry Monk has revealed that Barry Bannan will assume captain duties for the 2020/21 campaign.

The Owls’ boss confirmed the switch after Bannan led out the team for the goalless draw with Leicester at Loughborough on Saturday.

He exclusively told “I have spoken to Barry and Tom Lees and I’ve made that decision - I just feel Baz is at that stage here at Sheffield Wednesday where I want to challenge him and that is the reason for him having that captain’s armband.

“We all know how good a player he is but for him to go to that next step, another level that we’re going to need this season, this is a way of challenging that.

“With Tom, he’s been fantastic, he understands that it’s best for Barry and for the team in that sense.

“Tom is a leader anyway whether he has the armband or not, he’s a true leader with the standards he sets every day and everyone respects him for that and that will not be diminished.”
