Fresh attacking options give Owls a lift

2 February 2020

The January transfer window saw Wednesday bring three new faces into the attack and Garry Monk says those additions will give everyone at the club a lift.

Connor Wickham and Josh Windass made deadline day loan switches to S6, from Crystal Palace and Wigan respectively, and will be eligible for the next game when the Owls travel to Barnsley.

Alessio Da Cruz, on loan from Parma, had his first Wednesday outing from the bench in the draw with Millwall and made a positive contribution in the game.

Add into the mix the return of Fernando Forestieri and the Wednesday attack has been significantly boosted this past week.

Monk said: “It has been, since Steven Fletcher’s injury, an area of priority.

“So to bring the new lads in I think will help us in that area to be more creative and ruthless.

“That’s the plan with the new guys as well as the ones already here.

“We’re delighted to get them over the line and we’re very pleased to have them at the club.

“We’ve been tracking Connor for quite a while, we couldn’t quite get it done in terms of having him for Saturday – and same with Josh – but the fact they are in the group should give everyone a lift and everyone a challenge.

“It’s about having that bit of variety that can help us but the main thing about the three new lads is their attitude and determination to come here.

“They have been very clear in their actions that they wanted to be here, despite interest from other clubs. They want to be here and that’s what I want, players determined to fight for this club.

“Their profiles all fit what we are looking for and this will help move the club in the direction we want to go.

“We look forward to integrating them into the group and trying to put a run together.”
