Demanding intensity

27 January 2020

The Owls gave a strong response in the FA Cup clash with QPR on Friday and manager Garry Monk is demanding more of the same as his side travel to Wigan in midweek.

Victory in the cup over the R’s was just the tonic for Wednesday after their heavy Championship defeat to Blackburn.

Monk has stressed that intensity levels must be at a maximum for the Owls to be successful at the DW Stadium.

“I’ve said it before, we know they are capable but it’s about the intensity they do it with,” Monk said.

“It has to be there and that’s what I’m demanding from them and what I expect them to demand from themselves.

“People will say you deserve to be where you are in the table. You deserve to be there for whatever reason but when I look at Wigan, they are a team that in many ways defy their position.

“They are a much better team than what their league position says.

“I’ve watched a lot of their games and they have been very close, very unlucky in some of those games.”

Monk added: “They are a very good team and we have to be ready for that but as I said before the QPR game, there are things we are not happy with over the Christmas period and definitely of course against Blackburn.

“The response needed to be there, and it was on Friday. Now they need to take that into the league, that’s what I’m expecting to see on Tuesday.

“It was a little way to making amends and more for the fans with 3,000 of them going down to QPR we knew we had to show something for them.”
