U23s report: Bolton 1-2 Owls

21 January 2020

The Owls Under-23s came from behind to seal a 2-1 win away at Bolton on Monday evening.

Goals from Fraser Preston and Conor Grant either side of the break saw Wednesday overturn a one-goal deficit to claim the points at the Lancashire FA.

Wednesday went into the PDL2 clash without a win since November but the signs were positive in the early throes as Jack Stobbs – back from his loan spell with Livingston – got in behind Wanderers’ backline after 10 minutes but was denied by Matthew Alexander.

The deadlock was broken on 33 minutes after Connor Hall calmly finished past Joe Wildsmith from Muhammadu Faal’s perfectly weighted feed.

But the Owls regrouped and got in at the break level as Preston beat Wanderers goalkeeper Alexander at the near post from Josh Dawodu’s deep centre from the right.

A hectic start to the second period saw both sides go agonisingly close as Faal forced a good stop from Wildsmith from close range before Omar Damba struck wide when in on goal.

Faal and James Weir saw good chances go begging in the final third of the game but the decisive moment came in the 81st minute.

Grant picked up possession from Alex Hunt and drove into the box before firing low and hard into the net to give Wednesday the advantage.

Still there was time for Wanderers to create one more big chance and Wildsmith was to thank for preserving the lead in the final minute by making a stunning point blank save from Harry Brockbank.

Owls: Wildsmith, Dawodu, Trialist, Waldock, Shaw, Brennan, Stobbs (Hughes 75), Hunt, Damba (Borukov 66), Grant, Preston (O’Brien 75)
