A performance to be proud of

11 July 2020

Garry Monk said the Owls’ 3-0 victory over QPR at the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium was a performance to be proud of.

Goals from Dominic Iorfa, Josh Windass and Jacob Murphy rounded off an all-round top display from the travelling Owls.

Monk said: “We needed to respond and we did today. It was a complete performance from start to finish.

“It was a response to the last few games where we’ve performed well but not got over the line. I said to the players that we know the quality we have and how to work in that system.

“They focused and got their rewards for it. We scored three but we could have had more. And we kept a clean sheet which showed the concentration to the end.

“We’ve played well throughout games in this period and let ourselves down with focus, but today we had complete concentration and gave a more complete performance we can be proud of.

“As a team we played with great passion and heart, now we need to play like that consistently because today proves what we can do.”

Monk also acknowledged the sad news of former Wednesday manager Jack Charlton’s passing after a performance the man himself would no doubt have been proud of.

He added: “Some of my early football memories are those of Jack Charlton.

“The things he did with the Republic or Ireland clearly stick in the memory.

“He was obviously the manager of Sheffield Wednesday too, and is held very much in high regard at this club.

“He’s a loss to the club, more importantly his family, friends and the football world.

“His family are in our thoughts.”
