Confidence in the team

26 June 2020

Garry Monk has moved quickly to praise his players for the way in which they have approached the restart and their commitment to the club.

On a week where Wednesday announced the pending departure of several players out of contract, the manager has lavished praise on the group at Middlewood Road and underlined the confidence he has in the team.

The upcoming period will be a challenge without question but Monk says his players are as ready as they possibly can be thanks to hard work and preparation in the weeks gone by.

“Clarity is what you're always after,” Monk said. “When you have clarity, you know what can do and plan a little bit better. It makes things a little bit easier to organise.

"We've tried to pre-empt what we can do or we can’t do in terms of rotation.

“But we’re really pleased with the group. They are in as good a condition as they can possibly be and that is credit to the players. They have worked incredibly hard.

"We've done everything, the players have done absolutely everything they can. That shows a real confidence in how I feel in them and because of that type of mentality shift.”

With Wednesday set to for a trip to Bristol City on Sunday, followed by a relentless four weeks of fixtures, Monk is pleased with the options and competition in the squad be that experienced, loan or youth players who are all vying for their place.

He added: “They've done the work they should have and now they are each trying to change their situations and force their way in.

“Hopefully that's the start of that and it shows in the games. Whatever next season looks like, we hope we've already started that process.”
