U23s report: Wigan 2-1 Owls

2 March 2020

The Owls Under-23s narrowly missed out at in-form Wigan, going down 2-1 across the Pennines.

A brisk evening at the DW Stadium saw an entertaining PDL2 contest as the hosts moved into double figures in terms of successive wins.

They were pushed all the way, though, by Wednesday who gave a good account of themselves overall but just came up short.

Wigan’s Charlie Jolley fired an early warning shot over the top after only three minutes before the home side almost took the lead when Kyle Joseph’s header was cleared off the line by Liam Shaw.

The pressure would tell and the Latics hit the front on 16 minutes. Alex Perry swung over a deep corner and Emeka Obi was on hand to plant a firm header into the roof of the net.

Josh Render saved well from Jolley before Wednesday countered with Connor Grant twice having shots on goal.

The Owls stayed on the front foot and went into the break in confident mood, albeit 1-0 down.

But the visitors deservedly levelled on 55 minutes when substitute Fraser Preston’s cross was diverted only to Shaw, who fired across James Aspinall and in.

Wigan poured forward in a bid to regain their lead and stout Wednesday defending kept the score even.

Despite the hosts enjoying more of the ball, the contest seemed to be heading for a draw until the winner came seven minutes from the end.

A strong save from Render denied Jolley after the latter advanced one on one but the ball fell kindly for substitute Sean McGurk to curl nicely into the top corner.

Still there was time for Shaw to go close with a header almost on the full time whistle, which was met with a sigh of relief by the victorious Latics.

Wednesday: Render, Dawodu, Bates, Lee, Galvin, Stobbs (Hidalgo 80), Shaw, Brennan (Rice 87), Hughes (Preston 50), Grant, O’Brien
