Tony Pulis posted his maiden point as Wednesday ground out a creditable 1-1 draw at Swansea.
It was the proverbial game of two halves at the Liberty Stadium. The Owls bossed the first 45, the Swans the second and in truth both sides deserved a share of the spoils.
Adam Reach fired home for the visitors but the wideman’s goal was cancelled out by substitute Andre Ayew in a contest that took time to ignite.
But a three-minute burst of action brought the first half to life near the quarter hour mark.
Julian Börner, making his 50th Owls appearance, sent in a rasping drive that warmed the hands of Freddie Woodman on a chilly evening in Wales.
Play promptly switched to the other end, where Keiren Westwood stretched to palm Liam Cullen’s cross cum shot over the bar but the recalled keeper was feeling his groin from an earlier clearance.
That proved Westwood’s last involvement and he made way for Joe Wildsmith between the sticks.
But Wednesday stored a welcome boost as they burst into the lead on 27 minutes.
Barry Bannan’s corner picked out the advancing Reach, who drilled hard and low to notch his first strike of the season.
The opening goal visibly gave the Owls a lift and a period of domination followed, with Swansea struggling to get the ball out of their own half.
The hosts needed a change of tack after the break and made a double substitution to that end, introducing Ayew and Kasey Palmer from the bench.
And right on the hour, Ayew made his mark to haul Swansea level following a much-improved start to the second half.
Ayew made room for himself in the area with some nimble footwork before looking up to curl emphatically past Wildsmith.
The pendulum had swung the way of the Swans and they came within inches of a quickfire second when Yen Dhanda lashed a fierce daisycutter just the wrong side of the post.
The same player was narrowly off target again on 78 minutes with a wicked free kick that sailed narrowly wide.
It was back to the walls for Wednesday through the closing stages as Swansea dominated possession – dangerman Ayew smashes over the bar as the home side sought a winner.
But the Owls’ backline was well organised and rigid which, coupled with the impressive attacking display in the first half, earned a welcome point.
