Wednesday returned to winning ways with a 1-0 success over Bournemouth at Hillsborough.
It was the Cherries’ first defeat of the season and no more than the Owls deserved as the hosts shook off the strains of a bleak week to post the points.
The influential Barry Bannan scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot, with the same incident leading to Steve Cook taking an early bath.
Wednesday were also reduced to 10 men as Kadeem Harris received a late, late red card for dangerous play but the hosts held out for victory.
The signs were promising from the off for the Owls, with Bannan dictating play in the engine room.
Adam Reach stabbed a foot wide following a Bannan set piece and Liam Palmer went closer still from the same source.
Josh Windass fired just over as Wednesday turned the screw, leaving Bournemouth camped in their own half.
Harris stood up a deep cross for Elias Kachunga at the back stick midway through the first 45 and the DR Congo international headed inches past the post.
Windass executed a rasping free kick that whistled past Asmir Begovic but the wrong side of the upright before the Cherries finally made an impression four minutes from half time when a Chris Mepham header was off target.
Joe Wildsmith tipped a long ranger from Arnaut Danjuma over right on the break but the Owls went down the tunnel very much in the ascendancy.
Bournemouth started the second period with much more zest and carved two early chances.
First David Brooks was denied by a superb Julian Börner block and then Lloyd Kelly glanced the resulting corner wide.
Undaunted, Wednesday hit back with Palmer going close for a second time from a wicked Bannan set play.
Back came Bournemouth and Josh King might have done better with a clear header six yards out.
And the Cherries were made to pay for that profligacy on 70 minutes when the game’s decisive moment went the way of Wednesday.
Bannan sent Windass scampering in on goal with a delicious feed and the forward rounded Begovic only to be barged to the floor by Cook.
The referee pointed to the spot, Cook saw red, and Bannan stepped up to send Begovic the wrong way.
Try as they might, Bournemouth never truly troubled the Owls’ backline in the closing stages, despite Wednesday losing Harris in stoppage time when the winger was sent off after tangling with King on the far touchline.
There was no real time for the visitors to take advantage with the numbers levelled, leaving Wednesday to manage the contest to a welcome conclusion.
