We must run our own race

27 October 2020

Garry Monk has called for strong minds and strong mentalities following setbacks at Hillsborough last week.

As Wednesday work hard to claw back the point deficit, the manager is well aware there will be blows along the way.

But with barely any time between fixtures on which to dwell, the Owls must respond and the next challenge is a South Yorkshire derby on Wednesday evening.

“We will have setbacks but we haven't got time to dwell on it,” Monk said. “We have to be much better and hopefully some margins will start to go for us.

“We had a disappointed changing room and quite rightly so but we don't have time to dwell.

“We know what is at stake for us and we are running our own race. It's a race that we constantly want to be doing well at throughout but we are going to have to take some blows along the way.”

Our meetings with neighbours Rotherham have often produced fascinating encounters, particularly away from home and with bags of stoppage time drama.

Monk will want to see his players rise to the challenge and the added derby element the fixture will bring in midweek.

“We have to make sure we come fighting back,” he continued. “It is vitally important we understand that.

“It is not an easy job for anyone; myself, the players, the staff and everyone involved at the club. We have to stick together.

“There's pressure - inward pressure, outward pressure and we are trying to find a way to deal with it. Overall, we have dealt with it pretty well.”
