It's one from 46

12 September 2020

Saturday spawned the perfect start to Wednesday’s new Championship season as an impressive display at Cardiff resulted in a 2-0 win.

A performance of pride and purpose saw a richly deserved three-point haul, but Garry Monk’s feet will stay firmly on the ground.

He told swfc.co.uk: “It’s one game from 46, that’s all. It’s a great start and that’s the marker, and we have to keep it going.

“I was proud of the performance and I don’t think it could have gone much better. We were excellent with the ball and just as importantly we worked so hard without the ball.

“Cardiff are a good side and we came here with a plan to win the game and the players executed that plan, so credit to them.”

Monk was reluctant to pick out individuals from a solid team show but did express his delight with the rearguard.

He added: “I’m pleased for the whole team but in particular the back three because nothing was getting past them today.

“You could see what that clean sheet meant to everyone so I’m delighted for them. At the other end the front lads worked so hard and got their rewards with the goals.

“We are all willing each other to succeed, the spirit in the group is fantastic and a clean sheet with three points is the perfect start to the season.”
