What strikers live for

14 September 2020

Jordan Rhodes was pleased to get off the mark during the Owls’ 2-0 opening day victory over Cardiff on Saturday.

The striker scored a typical poacher’s goal on 44 minutes which sealed the result in Wales, and he was delighted to have opened his tally.

Speaking exclusively with swfc.co.uk, Rhodes said: “It was by no means a classic, but strikers live for those scrappy goals!

“I’m really happy to get off the mark and help the team. That’s what strikers live for.

“The ball from Barry and the headers from Dom and Josh, it was pretty much the perfect set piece situation!

“Hopefully there’s a few more of those to come throughout the season and we can have a team that is strong in the set-piece department when attacking and defending.”

The striker praised the team environment away from the pitch, noting a strong bond in the Wednesday dressing room.

He added: “I think’s it’s well documented that the team bond is strong.

“We’ve all got each other’s backs and are working hard for each other. We’re all socialising and we’ve all got time for each other, that comes from respect and trust.

“There’s been a conscious effort as well to make sure the new lads are settled in this environment.

“The unit is strong when we’re playing well but it’s important we stay that way throughout the season and see where it takes us.”

The Owls return to Carabao Cup action on Tuesday evening with a trip to Rochdale in the second round, and Rhodes insists Wednesday want to build on the first round win over Walsall.

The marksman added: “It’s a competition we took very seriously against Walsall and we will be doing so again.

“Hopefully we come away with the win on the night against a tough Rochdale side and there’s another away tie waiting if we get through.”
