Deserved point for Under-23s

28 April 2021

The Owls’ Under-23s picked up a point in the capital, posting a 1-1 draw against QPR.

An end to end contest was littered with chances but robust defending at both ends kept the scoreline down as the spoils were shared.

The Owls were off to the ideal start, taking the lead on seven minutes. Liam Shaw found Alex Hunt, who threaded through for Fisayo Dele-Bashiru to finish well into the bottom corner.

Rangers then began to dominate possession, albeit without posing a threat to Luke Jackson between the Wednesday sticks.

That was until just past the half-hour mark when Jackson was required to make a flying save from Niko Hamalainen before Ryan Galvin produced a perfectly-timed challenge to thwart Macauley Bonne.

The hosts started the second half on the front foot and Hamalainen prodded over the bar from close range but the Owls hit back, with Liam Waldock and Charles Hagan going close.

The next goal was key and it went the way of Rangers on 63 minutes. Substitute Stephen Duke-McKenna picked out Bonne with a fine cross and the latter headed past Jackson to level.

Either side might have netted a winner in the closing stages as a Shaw effort was hacked off the line by Franklin Domi, while Bonne twice almost added to his equaliser.

But it was a day for the defences overall and the Owls returned to Sheffield with a well deserved point.

Wednesday: Jackson, Brennan (Dawodu 73), Rice, Cox, Farmer, Waldock, Hunt, Shaw, Galvin, Hagan, Dele-Bashiru
