Darren Moore: Charlton talking points

7 August 2021

Darren Moore spoke on a number of subjects following Wednesday's opening day draw against Charlton at The Valley.

On Charlton…

It’s a solid start and something to build on. Defensively we were sound, we were solid. We had some chances, not too many but some, and you only need one to go in to win a game. Baz nearly got it at the end, it was a great run and he was unlucky. Neither goalkeeper was worked too much and that’s credit to the defences. I thought the game was played at a high pace. We have a lot to look back on, we have a good week of training ahead and it will stand us in good stead for the Doncaster game next weekend.

On Callum Paterson…

Thankfully it’s good news on Patto, he’s up and around and walking around, he’s fine. We are all thankful for that because it could have been a lot worse. He’s whacked his head and I think he’s saved a certain goal so he put his body on the line for us and you can’t ask for anything more. He’s got a big bump on his head. We will monitor him closely over the next 24 hours and we will be guided by the doctors. There will be some protocols we have to follow and we will follow them to he letter because he was knocked out for a brief period of time.

On the return of fans…

Both sides had to soak up the atmosphere that was generated today, it was electric at times. They’ve been a long time away and to see supporters back was great to see for everyone. I thought our fans were magnificent and I want to say a big thank you to them for the noise they made and the chanting throughout. Let’s not forget this game was live on Sky, it was in London, it was a tea time kick-off so thank you to the 3,000 or so who made the trip down from Sheffield and I wish you all a safe journey home.

On the coaching staff…

I’ve brought in Simon Ireland and he’s a really good professional with so much experience. He’s excited to be here and I’m excited to have him here. We have the right man I believe and I can tell you he beat off some fierce competition for this role. We interviewed some really strong candidates and Simon was the outstanding candidate. I think that completes my staff for now, we have a great dynamic behind the scenes with Jamie, Neil, Adriano and now Simon.

On Wayne Jacobs…

Wayne is a really good friend of mine, we go back many years, we’ve worked together before. He’s got a couple of weeks off so I’ve invited him in to get in and around the place. It’s not an appointment, it’s more of a friend, a very experienced pro, coming into the camp and offering some help.
