23s hit back at Barnsley to earn a point

15 December 2021

Sheffield Wednesday Under-23s drew 1-1 with Barnsley at Oakwell training ground on Tuesday afternoon.

Wednesday came from behind to post a point thanks to a long range hit from Paulo Aguas after the break, to cancel out William Hondermarck’s first half opener.

A point apiece was a fair result for a young Owls side who came up against an experienced Barnsley outfit including several first team players.

For Wednesday there were starts for Kwame Boateng, who recently completed his move to the Owls after a successful extended trial spell, while Jayden Onen, making his second appearance for our 23s, stored just over an hour under his belt.

Under-23 manager Lee Bullen said: "We played a young side and we battled away, it was a good test for them.

“We went a goal down but the character was fantastic.

“We’ve had a lot of ups and downs this season but I am really pleased with the desire of this team and five or six weeks ago, we might not have come back in this game.

“But they are picking up confidence. Last week we fielded a very strong side against Hull and this time, it was the opposite way around with Barnsley naming a strong team.

“You look at the teamsheet before the game and see how strong they are and if you mention it in your team talk it can go two ways; the young lads may get nerves or for others it can be the catalyst to go out and put in a good performance to show what they can do.

“Under the circumstances it was a very good point. Josh Render made a great save in the first half, had to pick the ball out of his net once and otherwise, had relatively little to do.

“Their goalkeeper made a number of routine saves and a lot of the play was in between the boxes with neither side really dominating. Fair play to our boys, they defended really well."

On Aguas’ fine long range effort, Bullen added: “He’s got that in his locker and it was a really great strike. He doesn’t do it often enough! But we know he’s got it in him and he took it really well.”

Owls: Render, Boateng, Thompson, Agbontohoma, Aguas, Waldock, Glover, Onen (Trueman 65), Zottos, Trialist (Farmer 46), Bonnington (Cadamarteri 75)
