Owls 23s held by Hull

9 December 2021

Wednesday’s Under-23s played out an entertaining 2-2 draw with Hull at Middlewood Road on Thursday afternoon.

Saido Berahino was on target for the Owls but the Tigers hit back with goals from Josh Hinds and McCauley Snellgrove before Sylla Sow ensured his side took a deserved share of the spoils.

Wednesday enjoyed the early possession and were rewarded on the 15-minute mark when Lewis Farmer looked up from the right flank to pick out the leaping Berahino, whose header was firm past Tom Macauley.

It was the ideal start for the hosts and the Tigers were sparked into life, going close to levelling with their first attack of purpose.

Snellgrove found space 20 yards out before unleashing a rising effort that sailed inches over the crossbar.

Wednesday swiftly regained control, though, prodding and probing in the final third, with Adedoyin causing problems.

The striker showed one particularly impressive piece of trickery to flummox his marker inside the box and create room for a shot charged down by Alfie Taylor.

Moments later, Macauley had to be at his best to tip a Berahino free kick over the top as the Owls pressed to double the lead before half time.

Adedoyin then cut inside but fired into the midriff of Macauley, who was certainly the busier of the two goalkeepers.

But right on the whistle, the Owls were hit with a sucker punch as Hull equalised against the run of play. Henry Curtis got to the byline and pulled back for Hinds to swivel and plant into the far corner.

Wednesday came out for the second half on the offensive and Jaden Brown slammed past the post after good work from Jay Glover.

Then in less than a minute, the game was turned on its head.

At one end, Berahino was thwarted in some style from close range by Macauley following a slick move between Liam Waldock and Sow.

Hull promptly broke – and were ahead inside 30 seconds. Oliver Green played a crossfield ball to Snellgrove, who moved towards the edge of the area and drilled a whistling effort past Wildsmith.

The Owls went straight upfield and Sow was denied by Macauley before the Dutchman made his mark on 68 minutes.

Taking a fine ball from Brown into his stride, Sow breezed past Taylor and placed beyond the outstretched palm of Macauley.

It was all Wednesday through the closing stages and Adedoyin clipped just past the upright with Macauley beaten, Sow had a prodded effort blocked by the overworked keeper and Sow was inches off target with a downward header from 10 yards.

Still the Owls pressed but could not find the decisive finish and the visitors held on to head back to Humberside with a hard-fought point.

Owls: Wildsmith, Farmer, Trialist, Agbontohoma, Brown (Aguas 71), Waldock, Byers (Trialist 60), Glover, Adedoyin, Berahino (Onen 60), Sow
