Report: Crewe 0-2 Wednesday

11 December 2021

Three more points, a second clean sheet of the week, the unbeaten run extends to 12 and a penalty save to boot.

The Owls emerged comfortable 2-0 winners at Crewe on Saturday to keep the feelgood factor in S6, with Barry Bannan’s fine solo goal laying the foundations for victory.

The in-form Bailey Peacock-Farrell crucially denied Chris Porter from the spot before Lee Gregory rubberstamped the win.

The contest was certainly a slow burner and it was midway through the first half before the first real attempt on goal when Rio Adebisi saw a low shot deflected wide.

But on 27 minutes the Owls motored upfield and burst into the lead. Bannan was the architect and finisher, slaloming past two defenders and letting loose from 20 yards. Keeper David Richards sprang to his left but the power was too much and Wednesday were ahead.

Crewe sought an immediate route back as Zak Williams flashed an inviting feed across goal that just evaded three onrushing team mates.

Play went straight back to the other end courtesy of a purposeful run from Theo Corbeanu that ended with Richards beating out the Canadian’s long ranger.

Then two minutes before the break, the Railwaymen spurned a golden opportunity to head down the tunnel on terms.

Scott Robertson’s fierce drive struck Bannan’s arm and the referee pointed to the spot. Porter went down the middle but Peacock-Farrell held his ground to save and acrobatically kept out the same player’s header from the rebound.

And that provided the perfect platform for Wednesday to double the lead two minutes into the second half.

Jack Hunt delivered a telling cross from the right and Gregory climbed high to nod out of Richards’ reach into the far corner.

Callum Paterson was a whisker away from converting Marvin Johnson’s fizzing feed as the Owls looked to put the game to bed.

Indeed, Wednesday were in complete control - Richards denied Paterson at his near post, the Scot hit the woodwork moments later and substitute Josh Windass was thwarted by a stunning stop on the line by Billy Sass-Davies.

A third goal would hardly have flattered the Owls such was their dominance but Darren Moore will doubtless be content with a routine win and further nudge up the League One table.

Wednesday: Peacock-Farrell, Hunt, Brennan, Palmer, Johnson, Corbeanu (Shodipo 82), Bannan, Dele-Bashiru (Windass 69), Wing, Paterson, Gregory (Berahino 82)
