Calm heads in the heat of the battle

19 February 2021

It’s another big matchday at Hillsborough this weekend as we host relegation rivals Birmingham.

Wednesday have been in superb form on home soil and with 17 games left of the season to battle for survival, the Owls will need to continue in the same vein at home.

Five consecutive wins at Hillsborough has been the backbone of our revival and has helped to keep us well in the fight for maintaining Championship status.

Still, a lot of football remains to be played this season and Saturday’s game with Birmingham is next up.

A win could potentially move the Owls away from the bottom three and Neil Thompson has called for calm heads.

“Calm heads will be key,” he said.

“You need calm heads to make the right decisions in the heat of the battle. They can all do it but what matters is what happens when they cross that line.

“They have to show their qualities, belief and trust in each other. Every player has got to give it a go. We have to keep everyone focused on the goal of it.

“We have got a lot of games coming up and it is about getting them in the right headspace.”

Wednesday suffered a setback in midweek with a narrow loss to Stoke in a close fought game.

In recent defeats to Coventry and Millwall, Wednesday have responded superbly from each, bouncing back with victories and that will be the aim on Saturday.

Thompson added: “This is a challenge you have to relish. People will talk about six pointers but there are three points at stake tomorrow, we have good momentum at home, it’s our patch and we have to make it a place others don’t enjoy coming. We have to be positive and on the front foot.”
