Owls stunned by Birmingham

29 January 2021

The Owls were swept aside by a ruthless attacking Birmingham display at the Trillion Trophy Training Centre.

The hosts ran out 5-1 winners as goals from Josh Andrews (2), Tate Campbell, Oriol Soldevila and Kyle Hurst put Wednesday to the sword.

Declan Thompson scored with almost the last kick to at least put the visitors on the scoresheet but the outcome was never in doubt.

Birmingham took command from the first whistle to lay foundations for a stellar second half showing that determined the outcome of a one-sided game.

In truth, Blues might have been out of sight before the break but for some wayward finishing that was duly corrected.

The only goal of the opening period came inside three minutes when Joe Redmond teed up Andrews from a set piece to nod past Luke Jackson.

Amari Miller, Geraldo Bajrami, Soldevila and Andrews all missed chances before half time, after which Birmingham ran riot.

Campbell turned provider on 58 minutes, embarking on a mazy run to feed Andrews, who converted into the roof of the net.

On 70 minutes it was 3-0 and all but over. Bajrami slid a neat through ball into the path of Soldevila and the midfielder opened his body to find the bottom corner.

Wednesday had little in way of a reply as the Midlanders turned the screw and Andrews doubled his tally two minutes later.

The pacy forward raced on to a high ball over the top and advanced to bury with some aplomb to further extend the advantage.

Still there was more misery to follow for the beleaguered Owls as Birmingham added a fifth with seven minutes to go. Substitute Ryan Stirk sent a piercing pass to Hurst and the winger rounded Jackson to tap into an empty net.

Wednesday did manage a consolation right at the last when Alex Hunt whipped in a free kick for Thompson to finish but the muted celebrations underlined an afternoon to forget.

Wednesday: Jackson, Thompson, van Aken (Farmer 46), Rice, Dawodu (Reaney 50), Hunt, Galvin, Waldock, Grant, Huxley (Bonnington 46), Hughes
